About

Updated June 23, 2010:

Hi! I’m Susan, sometimes known as “SpaceCase”. I’m a number-cruncher by day, who used to be more comfortable with Excel than an Excato knife. A few years ago, I discovered I needed a creative outlet outside of my extremely numbers-oriented job. I picked up knitting, and absolutely loved it. As I became more confident with my knitting, I started to try other crafts: crochet, some sewing, and a little bit of jewelry-making. Recently, I’ve started the baby steps toward quilting, and couldn’t be happier.

When I started writing about my crafts on the internet way back in 2005, my site’s subtitle was “A by-the-numbers girl tries to find her creative side.” I think that five years later, I can safely take the “tries to” out of that description. This makes me smile. I still make plenty of mistakes, though, and I’m more than happy to share them here – I figure it’s all part of the learning process, right? (Hence the “Almost” in Almost Crafty.)

If you’re looking for the basics: I’m Susan. I’m 30-something. I live in Louisville, Kentucky with my husband Mr. Martini and our two cats, Ruby and Zelda. We moved to Louisville in September of 2008 after living in Chicago for six years. We’re still getting used to it, but so far we’re really enjoying our new city.

I can spend hours in a bead store and not buy anything out of sheer befuddlement. I can spend 15 minutes in a yarn store and buy way too much wool. My fabric stash has gone from zero to almost out of control in a very short amount of time. I’m learning to embrace the colors orange and green, and love blues and reds. I’m a Leo.

This site has had a few incarnations over the last few years, and changed names several times, first due to a hosting problem, and then due to my fickleness. Any posts you see prior to 2008 were from these other sites – which is why links or images may be broken. I’m trying to fix all of these, but if there’s something you just need to see right away, feel free to let me know via the info on my contact page.

Thanks so much for reading! Enjoy your stay!
