    Crafty FAIL: Punch Needle Embroidery

    By Susan | November 16, 2008

Earlier this month, I took a trip to Hobby Lobby to stock up on supplies for this month-long crafty extravaganza. While I was there, a cute little kit caught my eye. I figured a small kit, with all of the supplies included (almost) was worth a few dollars and gave me an excuse to try something new.

While I had planned on sewing this weekend (more on that in another post), instead I pulled out the punch needle kit today to give it a try.

For those that don’t know about punch needle embroidery (of which I was one, until I saw that kit) – it’s different from standard embroidery. It uses a punch needle to push floss through the back of the fabric to create little hoops of thread on the right side. You fill in areas and the result is a design made of soft, cushy thread loops. Here are some samples on the Michael’s site.

I gave it a whirl this afternoon, and, well… I wasn’t successful. First, it wasn’t to easy to poke the punch needle through the fabric. Mr. Martini was laughing at the faces I was making as I tried to control the punching motion, since that needle is sharp and I didn’t want to accidentally stab myself. Second, if you pull the punch needle out too far, it pulls out the loops you’ve made (or in my case, several loops at a time).

The process takes a steady, even hand, and today, I just didn’t have it. After several tries, I ended up with this:

I didn’t even get a chance to photograph it in process before I accidentally pulled all of the stitching out.

For next time, I’ll have fabric glue at the ready for the ends of the floss. But for now, the kit is going back in the cabinet for another day. The beauty about craft supplies is that they don’t go stale.
