Let’s see, where were we?
Oh, yes, the chunky cable knit hat. Ruby did, indeed, let me finish it the next night. I ended up running out of the light blue yarn, and had to finish the crown decreases in a different color. Then I tried it on. It fit great. It was warm. It was snuggly and cable-y. It was also chunky and lumpy and did I mention lumpy?
It was hideous. Let us never speak of it again.
After a weekend of bad, bad knitting attempts - another chunky non-cabled hat (too big), a hat for Mr. Martini (I could not get the Emily Ocker cast-on to work, even though I used it effortlessly on my ill-fated No Swatch Hat) and a pair of mittens (did not have the right size DPNs - note to self, get a set of #5s already) I gave up.
I needed a quick project that had a little thinking. In a fit of desparation, I pulled out the Cat Bordhi book I bought this summer, and cast on for the practice pair of “Little Sky Socks.”
Much better:
Here’s #1, completed on Monday while watching TV. I’m practically done with the second, but some insomnia this week made me too tired to finish them last night.
I had a little trouble with the increases at the point of the upside-down V in this first one, which is why I wanted to do the second. It looks a lot better.
I love the construction of these - anything that eliminates the dreaded instead increase/decrease to me is great. Plus, I finally, finally, finally understand how to conceal short row wraps now. Hallelujah!
I guess my knitting mojo is coming back a little bit. I think another pair of wee little practice socks may be in order, though, just in case.

Added bonus: wee little practice socks are cute!

Glad you hit your knitting groove again! I have been hearing about that Cat Bordhi book from everyone; I think I may have to put it on my Christmas list.

Um, sorry to speak of it again, but as I was staring down a it’s-my-mom’s-birthday and-i-have-invested-in-no-other-gifts deadline, my Unoriginal Hat for her was looking lumpy and weird. It looked about 80 times better after blocking - the stitches really flattened out.
