One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
By Susan | October 9, 2007
Remember those lovely objects I wrote about last week? The brown hat and the aubergine fetchings?
Yeah, well, they won’t be seeing the light of day for awhile.
I did a load of laundry and threw the hat in with the wash. I washed it and dried it and was absolutely amazed that it was still too big. When Knitpicks says “Superwash,” they mean it. I did note that the row gauge did pull up just a tiny bit, so not only is it too large around my head, it is now just a tad too short. Brilliant! Humph.
And the aubergine Fetching mitts? Well, I had them in my knitting bag, which I apparently didn’t zip all the way. A little cat went sniffing, unzipped the bag, and managed to play with one enough to chomp through some of the stitches at the top of one of the mitts. Before I ever got to wear them. I’ll be adding a picture to the “Knits the Cat Ate” gallery as soon as I have the stomach to photograph it. Luckily, I have enough yarn left over to make another one, but… come on. That’s just not right.
In other news, appear to be suffering from an incurable combination of “Second Sock Syndrome” and “Startitis.” Observe:
ONE Fleece Artist Sea Wool sock, and
ONE Garter Rib Koigu sock. The mates to these socks? Yeah, don’t really feel like making them. Because I got this yarn:
Duet Sock Yarn from A Swell Yarn Shop in “Fall Leaves.” I have already started another sock with a contrasting heel and toe. Will I make both of them? Who knows!
I’m ususally a little frustrated by the unfinished objects, but I’ve finally realized something very important:
My knitting = my time = my rules. If I want to knit it? I’ll knit it. If not? Well, I’ll knit it some other time. Or not. And the Knitting Police are not going to break down my front door and demand their second socks at any particular time. I’ll get to it when I get to it. Or not.
Ahhhh, that felt good. It almost makes up for the whole too big hat/chewed up mitt thing.
Almost.

Second Sock Syndrome? I call it The Punishment Sock.
A wise woman once taught me to knit both socks simultaneously ont two sets of DPNs “landmark to landmark”. This way when you’ve just finished one . . . you’re just a toe away from completing a pair. Give it a try.
